LAND USE PLANNING

Land Use Planning creates policies that guide how the land and its resources will be used. Planning is directed by the social, cultural, and economic interests of Sahtu beneficiaries, residents, and all Canadians. Both traditional and scientific knowledge are used as a basis for the plan. The SLUPB is currently in the process of producing a draft land use plan which will be circulated to the communities and to all stakeholders upon completion. The Land Use Plan will designate three categories of land in the Sahtu Settlement Area. These designations are conservation zones, special management zones, and multiple use zones.

  • Conservations zones - no development is permitted.
  • Special management zones - development is permitted with conditions as specified in the plan.
  • Multiple use zones - development is permitted, subject to current regulatory requirements.
